School Motto: Towards Excellence
Dear Parents of Poi Ching
On behalf of the school, I would like to welcome you to a new and exciting year ahead.
2020 was a historic year for Poi Ching. It was a milestone year with our centenary celebrations. Poi Ching has come a long way. From the time of our founder, Reverend Canon Guok Koh Muo, to coming under management of the Futsing Association, becoming a government-aided school, and achieving Special Assistance Plan status, our goal as a school has stood the test of time. Poi Ching stands today, true to our founder’s cause to provide quality education, having moulded generations of excellent Poi Ching graduands.
French poet Victor Hugo once famously said, “He who opens a school door closes a prison.” Indeed, education is the key to character building. Apart from home, schools are the very bastions where our children come to learn not just about academics, but how to be the best that they can be. They learn to be purposeful, to contribute actively to the progress of our community and the nation. In Poi Ching, they learn the importance of loyalty, filial piety, prudence, and righteousness. They learn to be conscientious, discerning, honest and humble individuals. They learn to embark on the journey towards excellence.
Dissecting our motto, “towards” emphasises the process. As important, if not more so than the destination, the process provides countless opportunities for dreaming, hoping, doing, and even failing. But every single opportunity is a chance for learning, for our students to become better versions of themselves. And this better version of themselves is the very “excellence” in our motto. It is not a flawless, perfect student, but one who constantly seeks to better himself with positivity and resilience.
In embarking on this journey towards excellence, I would like our students to remember the adage – “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Have courage to make this first step, and the rest will carry you along the way.
Our children do not walk alone. We will be there with them from the time they step through the gates to their graduation. Let us work together on this journey towards excellence.
