The Total Defence Day 2012 message, “It’s My Turn”, calls on us to do our part for Singapore. We are challenged to have the courage to step up, not just in times of crisis, but also in our ordinary lives. The first national shared value, “Nation before community and society above self”, encapsulates this Singaporean spirit of service to our neighbours and to those around us. A culture of volunteering, a gracious nature, a willingness to learn – these are all critical aspects of the total defence mission, and are ways in which we can take our turn in strengthening our Singaporean identity.
